Accessibility
For Readers
The University of Oregon Libraries is committed to hosting accessible open journals. The Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform we use to host our Open Access journals comes with an accessible default theme that has been tested and complies with WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0). See Public Knowledge Project's default theme accessibility statement for more information about OJS platform accessibility. To learn about active accessibility progress and issues visit OJS's accessibility GitHub page.
If you encounter any accessibility issues with the journal platform, please contact us. If you encounter any accessibility issues with the content of any of the journals on this site, please contact the journal editor (listed on the journal's contact page) and copy digitalscholarship@uoregon.edu.
For Journal Managers
All UO Libraries hosted OA journals are required to meet digital accessibility standards in accordance with federal law and university policy. See the Digital Accessibility @ UO’s Policy and Standard’s page for more information. OJS with the default theme is an accessible platform (OJS 3.3+ Default Theme Accessibility Conformance Report), but full accessibility depends on journal editors and authors. Journal editors are responsible for ensuring that the content they host on OJS is accessible. That includes journal articles, web pages, images, and any custom theme/web elements.
Journal editors are responsible for working with UO Libraries' Open Journals team to create a journal-level accessibility policy and update the author guidelines and submission checklist to include steps related to creating accessible articles and checking for accessibility. Journal editors are responsible for making sure these guidelines are followed and that published issues meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards.
UO Libraries' Journal team and PKP are responsible for the digital accessibility of the OJS platform and the OJS default theme. The default theme is the only guaranteed accessible theme. Other themes may not be accessible when OJS is upgraded and require individualized testing. Journal editors should discuss non-default themes with the Journal team and make a plan for testing and updates.
